Welcome to SMEB
Welcome to the State Medical Education Board of Georgia (SMEB). The SMEB was established in 1952 for a two-fold purpose: to provide an adequate supply of physicians in rural areas of the state; and to provide a program of aid to promising medical students who do not have the financial means to attend medical school. Georgia was among the first states to establish a scholarship program for rural physicians. The Board is instrumental in physician recruitment to rural and underserved Georgia communities. With over 50 years in operation, the State Medical Education Board is the longest standing program of its kind in the country.
